What’s the Difference Between Emergency Childcare and Standard Childcare First Aid?

Two types of childcare first aid courses are available for participants in British Columbia. Participants can select either standard or emergency childcare first aid. The standard course takes approximately 18 hours to complete and requires two days of training. The emergency course takes approximately 8 to 10 hours to complete and is usually completed within one day. Topics taught in both classes are relatively similar, however, participants get more time to complete the content in the standard childcare first aid course. The reason for the two courses is based on provincial and legislative requirements. In British Columbia employees of daycare and childcare facilities are required to be certified in a 8 – 10 hour course which means employees are required to be certified in emergency childcare first aid. If a person plans on working in more than one province it is recommended that he or she receive certification in standard childcare first aid which can also be used as a substitute for employers that require emergency childcare first aid. Both courses include certification and training in CPR level “B” and in the use of automated external defibrillators (AED).

Tooth emergencies in children

Children are very rambunctious, often getting hurt from roughhousing. If your child pops a tooth loose, the best thing to do is to head to the dentist instead of emergency room. However, if your child hit his or her forehead, the emergency room would be a better choice. A a first aid rescuer, be sure to calm the child, and with a clean piece of cloth or gauze, stem the bleeding. You can use ice to help with pain and swelling. Be sure to bring the tooth to the dentist if it was knocked completely loose.
