Wound Care

Wounds that are “dirty”- exposed for a long period of time or caused by an unsterile object – could lead to an infection. Even a wound that is improperly treated can lead to an infection. The list below shows the signs and symptoms of an infected wound.

  • The wound becomes more painful
  • The wound is red
  • The wound has become swollen
  • The wound feels warmer than the surrounding area
  • The wound shows presence of pus (yellowish drainage)

If you notice any of these signs, contact a doctor immediately. When treating a open wound, ensure that you keep your hands and the wound clean. Try not to touch the wound and use gloves when possible (certain wounds need sterile gloves during cleaning). Avoid coughing or breathing directly over the wound. If possible try to wash and dry the surrounding skin
