Bites and scratches
Children often get bites and scratches from playing around and they are often not a thing to be worried about. However, animal bites can be dangerous because of the bacteria-causing infection that can result from them. As a trained first aid rescuer, watch out for these warning signs that a bite or scratch may be worse off than it looks.
Keep an eye out for:
- Persistent bleeding – if the wound is still bleeding after putting pressure on it for 10 minutes
- Deep wounds – high risk for infection and scarring
- Redness and swelling
- Increasing pain
Remember: If the animal that bit or attacked the child behaves strangely, it might have rabies. Get the child checked out by a doctor immediately.
